Listen to Obituary

For those of you reading this, you know this is by far the hardest goodbye I have ever had to give. My father, Curry Julian May, Sr., passed away on Father’s Day, which is truly fitting because he was the best father a child could have. Born in Washington, GA, on April 18, 1933 to Charles Julian May and Buelah Stribling May, he was a good-natured child and attributed his strong handshake to milking cows every morning at 5:00 AM. He attended Washington Wilkes High School and the Darlington School. He was a proud graduate of Virginia Military Institute, class of 1955, with a degree in civil engineering. He treasured his time at VMI and attended many reunions—most recently his 67th in 2022. He also held a Masters of Business Administration from Georgia State University.

In 1961, he married his beloved wife, Maxine Smith, and together they built a beautiful life and family, raising two children: Curry Julian May, Jr. and Caroline Smith May.

He joined Delta Air Lines in 1956 and rose through the ranks to retire as Senior Vice President of Technical Operations, a role he held with immense pride and dedication.

He was an active member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Society of Automotive Engineers, Marietta Country Club, All Saints Episcopal Church and was a Mason of the highest order.

He is predeceased by his wife Maxine Smith May, son Curry Julian May, Jr. He is survived by his daughter Caroline May Echols (Charles Ernest Echols, Jr.), daughter in law Margaret Adamson May, brother Charles Edward May, nephew Robert Julian May, and his cherished grandchildren: Virginia May Echols, John William Echols, McClendon Reeves May, and Curry Julian May, III.

A service will be held graveside at Resthaven Cemetery at 11:00 AM in Washington, GA on Saturday, June 21, 2025. After the service a reception will be held at the May home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Virginia Military Institute, All Saints Episcopal Church or the Church of the Mediator in Washington, GA.

Arrangements are provided by Hopkins Funeral Home.
