David Allen Callaway, age 70, of Washington, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 24, 2026.
Born on January 17, 1956, in Washington, Georgia, David was the son of the late Albert Henry Callaway and Alice Faye Edwards Callaway.
David was a high school graduate and spent more than 51 years doing what he loved—driving a truck. Known to his fellow truckers by his CB handle, “Slowpoke,” David had a lifelong love for the open road. Truck driving was more than just a job to him; it was a way of life. He continued driving until his health recently declined, a true testament to his dedication and love for what he did.
When he wasn't behind the wheel, David enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved riding his tractor, working around the house, and spending time outdoors. He especially enjoyed camping trips to the lake, where he made many cherished memories with family and friends. David was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. With his warm smile, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor, he had a special way of bringing laughter to those around him. He never met a stranger and will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and the joy he brought to others.
David is survived by his son, Jamie Allen Callaway (Kristie) of Washington; stepson, John Franklin of Washington; stepdaughter, Connie Kirk (Joe) of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina; brother, Wayne Callaway (Sally) of Washington; nephews, Will Callaway and Jesse Callaway; five grandchildren, Nikki Peters, Blaze Callaway, Kayli Beth Callaway, Brandon Kirk, and Audrey Kirk; and five great-grandchildren, who brought him much happiness.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vickie Lynn Callaway; brother, Ronnie Callaway; and grandson, Parker Carnes.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Hopkins Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Hopkins Funeral Home.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Tracy and Sonya Johnson for all they have done for David. Their kindness, love, and support will always be remembered and deeply appreciated.
After 51 years on the road, David's logbook is complete; his final load has been delivered, and his earthly miles have come to an end.
“Your journey is complete. Rest easy, driver. You've earned your eternal rest.”
