Jack Harvey, Jr., a beloved banker, community servant, family man, and friend, passed away peacefully on the morning of October 3, 2026, at Harper's Personal Care Home. He was 82 years old.
Born on November 3, 1943, in Augusta, Georgia, Jack was the son of Jack Harvey, Sr. and Bernice Walden Harvey of Thomson, Georgia. Known affectionately as "Big Ol' Jack" by his grandchildren, family, friends, and countless members of the community, he lived a life defined by service, integrity, honesty and genuine kindness.
Jack graduated from Thomson High School in 1961 and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Georgia Southern College in 1966. While attending Georgia Southern, he was a member of the school's tennis team. He furthered his banking education by graduating from the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University in 1975. In addition to his academic achievements, Jack proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and was honorably discharged in 1972.
Jack devoted his professional life to banking, building a distinguished career that spanned several decades. He began at Georgia Railroad Bank and Trust Company in Augusta before joining the Bank of Thomson, where he served as Senior Vice President. In 1980, he continued his career at Farmers & Merchants Bank in Washington, Georgia, as Executive Vice President then President/CEO before retiring. He concluded his banking career with IBT Enterprises in Atlanta, serving as Vice President before his retirement. Throughout his career, Jack earned the respect of his colleagues and customers alike and was honored to serve as Past President of Georgia Bankers Association Group 10.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jack was deeply committed to serving his community. He was a respected Rotarian and Kiwanian whose dedication to civic leadership and community improvement touched countless lives. He also served on the Washington-Wilkes Payroll Development Authority, the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and the Wilkes County Planning and Zoning Board. His leadership, generosity, and commitment helped strengthen the communities he loved.
Jack also enjoyed an active life outside of work. He was an avid golfer who could often be found on the golf course with friends. In his younger years, he was a passionate tennis player, a sport he enjoyed both competitively and recreationally.
In 1974, Jack married Victoria Johnson Harvey. Together they built a wonderful life and made their home in Washington, Georgia. They were blessed with one daughter, Caroline Lee Harvey Durham, who married Jay Durham. Jack was a proud grandfather to Jack Harvey Durham and Caroline Bethea Durham, both of whom brought him immense joy.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Harvey, Sr. and Bernice Walden Harvey of Thomson, and his brother, Retired Army Colonel William T. Harvey of Alexandria, Virginia. Brother-in-law Reverend Wayne Johnson and his wife Linda of Arkansas.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Victoria Johnson Harvey; his daughter, Caroline Lee Harvey Durham (Jay); his cherished grandchildren, Jack Harvey Durham and Caroline Bethea Durham; his sister, Mylle Mangum (Bill) of Eatonton, Georgia; his sister-in-law, Susan Harvey of Tysons, Virginia; his nephews, David Harvey (Patrice) of Vienna, Virginia, Don Harvey (Shannon) of Greensboro, Georgia, Mark Stafford (Gina) of Cookson, Oklahoma, Chris Stafford (Kerie) of Cabot, Arkansas; and numerous great-nieces, and great-nephews that he dearly loved.
A funeral service celebrating Jack’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at 2:00 PM in the Washington First Methodist Church. Visitation will be on Wednesday, one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens in Thomson, Georgia.
Pallbearers will be Jack Harvey Durham, David Harvey, Don Harvey, Sam Moore, T.R. Ferguson, and Tommy Wells.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Ricky Lindsey, Buddy Lindsey, Ed Geddings, Ray Thornton, David Thornton, Glenn Echols, and Jim Baston.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Washington First Methodist Church or Bristol Hospice in honor of Jack's life and legacy. Jack will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, gentle spirit, dedication to his family, and commitment to serving others. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched throughout his career, community, and family.
