John Albert Long, a cherished member of the Washington, Georgia community, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on April 2, 1934, in Wilkes County, Albert was the beloved son of the late John Michael and Eva Strother Long. He spent his final days surrounded by family at Wellstar Health in Augusta, GA.
Albert’s life was a testament to dedication, service, and love. He proudly served in the National Guard from 1952 to 1955. His commitment to education was evident through his academic achievements, earning a master's degree in education from the University of Georgia and an education specialist degree from Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi. Albert dedicated his professional life to guiding young minds as a guidance counselor at Sardis High School until his retirement.
After retiring, Albert embraced the life of a gentleman farmer, indulging in his passions for camping, traveling, and flying. As a private pilot and member of the Silver Wings Fraternity, he found joy in the skies. His adventures with the Olli Retirement Group, where he served as president for six years, brought him immense happiness and fulfillment.
Albert lived most of his life at his home place on Lincolnton Road.
He is survived by his devoted daughter, Norma Long Newell, and her husband, Steve, of Jekyll Island, GA; his brother, Bobby Long, and wife, Vivian, of Athens, GA; and his sister, Mary Long Rhodes, and husband, Charles, of Washington, GA. Albert was a proud grandfather to Rachel Rutherford, Taylor Gann and wife, Cristal, Brittney Newell, and Drew Newell, and a great-grandfather to Jack Rutherford, Owen Rutherford, Alan Gann, and Hiraya Gann.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2025, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Smyrna Community Church, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM, officiated by Rev. David Hagan. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will include Charles Rhodes Jr., Jeff Lukich, Dennis Dehil, Taylor Gann, Hammond Garrard, and Rev. David Hagan.
Albert’s legacy of kindness, wisdom, and adventure will be cherished by all who knew him. Arrangements are provided by Hopkins Funeral Home.
