Karl Richard Luken, age 83, of Washington, GA, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones, on Saturday, January 10, 2026.
He was born on August 20, 1942, in Watertown, South Dakota, to Ernest Richard Luken and LeighAnne (DeHaan) Luken, who instilled in him strong faith values and a love for family. Karl grew up in Watertown and had a life full of adventure, love, and service.
Karl served his country with distinction in Army Aviation, flying helicopters for 3 separate tours 1968-1970 during the Vietnam War, a testament to his bravery and dedication. After returning to the States, he became a highly respected helicopter flight instructor pilot for the Army, sharing his passion and skill with many who were fortunate to learn under his guidance. During the Volcanic Eruption of Mount Saint Helens on May 18, 1980, Karl was one of the many untiring pilots who flew Search and Rescue for survivors and non-survivors.
During Karl’s military career, he exemplified the slogan “Be All That You Can Be” by first, attaining the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4, CW4, then in 1972 by attending Southern California University’s (Go Trojans) Institute of Aerospace Safety and Managements to be certified as” An Aviation Safely Officer.” A title he took very seriously. In 1977 He attended St. Martin’s College in Olympia, WA, and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree.
Among the awards he received: Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device “V”, Air Medal (36th Award), Army Commendation Medal (4th Award), Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Master Army Aviator Badge.
Karl met his wife Lisa in Olympia WA, and they were married on Feb 29th, 1984. They were lovers of and active members of the National Reining Horse Association and raised and showed over 50 horses while residing in Olympia WA, Rocky Mount NC, and Washington GA. Karl retired from the Army while at Ft Indiantown Gap PA on Dec 1, 1997, and moved to Rocky Mount NC. In 2006, Karl & Lisa and various cats and horses relocated to Washington, GA.
His love for the open skies was mirrored by his passion for the open road, as he was an avid motorcycle enthusiast, riding with many devoted friends in Washington GA and finding peace and freedom in the ride. He was also a lifelong lover of Corvettes and was active in the local Memory Lane Cruisers Car Club.
A humble man, Karl wished for no formal services to be held in his honor. His family respects his wishes and appreciates the outpouring of love and support from friends and community during this time.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 42 years, Lisa (Moeller) Luken, who was his steadfast partner in all of life’s adventures, his cherished daughter, Mary Coleen (O'Connor) and her husband James Crowley of Walla Walla, Washington, and his devoted sister, Gail Lundburg of Russellville, Missouri. Karl was deeply proud of his family, including his seven grandchildren, Cailin (Jordan) Tollefson, Shea (Courtney) Crowley, Abby (Jerry) Sharp, Mary (Oliver) Grupenhoff, John Crowley, Liz (Zakk) Lott, and Kelly Crowley, as well as his four great-grandchildren, Henry Sharp, Oriel Sharp, Charlie Grupenhoff, and Morrigan Lott. He also leaves behind numerous loving nieces and nephews.
