Washington

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Martin David Gates, loving husband, brother, uncle, and friend. Martin passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the age of 73 at Wills Memorial Hospital in Washington, Georgia.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Martin was the son of the late Kenneth Lawrence Gates and Jean Gates. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Brian Gates. Martin had a lifelong love of horses and dedicated his career to working as a farrier. After earning his degree in Farrier Science in Fullerton, California, he founded Martin Gates Farrier Services, where he served the equestrian community with great skill and care.

Martin also loved animals of all kinds and enjoyed sharing his knowledge of birds and wildlife. He spent much of his free time playing the mandolin and guitar, bringing music and joy into his home. He was an enthusiastic cook and enjoyed preparing meals for those around him.

Martin is survived by his wife, Kim Gates; his brother, Larry Gates of Visalia, California; his sister, Lorraine Gates Michalak, and her husband, Mark, of Santa Barbara, California; and six nieces and their children. They will all cherish their memories of him.
