Ms. Mary McAvoy Howard Hawes, 93, of Bartram Trace Rd. in Rayle, passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at Kindred Hospice Athens. Ms. Hawes was born in Rayle and had lived in Wilkes County all of her life.She was the daughter of the late Pope and Susie Sherrer McAvoy.She was twice married and widowed, first by Mr. P. M. Howard, and then by Mr. Marvin Hawes.She had been a homemaker much of her life and a clerk at Peavy’s Drug Store for several years.She had been a member of the Phillips Mill Baptist Church, where she was its oldest living member. Ms. Hawes is survived by one son, John Edward (Dawn), of Athens; one daughter, Deana H. Sherrer (Brent), of Rayle; one brother, Henry Pope McAvoy, of Rayle; four grandchildren, Ivy Land, Sherrer Thornton, Brandon Howard, and Adam Howard; and four great grandchildren, Summer Land, Landon Howard, Peyton Howard, and Jaxson Howard; and she was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Howard. Funeral services will be at 3:00pm on Sunday, August 5, 2018, at the Phillips Mill Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Woods officiating.Interment will follow in the church cemetery.The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday one hour prior to the service (2-3pm).
