Thomas Wilson Phillips, M.D. 84, of Washington, Georgia passed away peacefully on May 21, 2026, from a heart condition. Tom was born in Atlanta, Georgia on November 12, 1941, at Crawford Long Hospital. He lived most of his life in Atlanta. He attended North Fulton High School, Oglethorpe University, the Medical College of Georgia and the University of Florida. He entered private practice as a Radiation Oncologist after serving in the Navy, (LCDR) during Vietnam, as a flight surgeon assigned to the Marine Corps.
According to the world, Tom lived a full life, experiencing many things. Later in life he was blessed with a family. Tom & Beth were married thirty-four years and have two children, Mary Beth and Tommy. Tom was a wonderful Dad. He loved his children with all his heart and was blessed to be "Grandpa." This was the highlight of Tom's last years.... being Grandpa alongside Grandma. It was pure joy.
Tom enjoyed working with his hands and mind. He absolutely LOVED being a physician because he cared about his patients and the wonderful men and women he worked with... he considered them family.
He loved to work on anything and could fix almost anything he touched; he learned this from his father. He also enjoyed painting, especially landscapes. Traditional oil painting was his style but he was so gracious to paint odd, out of character paintings for Beth... like yellow dogs and snowmen. He happily painted them, showing his passive, pleasing disposition and his love for her.
Tom experienced and accomplished so much but the greatest day of his life was November 5, 2017 when he surrendered his life to Jesus. A book in the Bible, Ecclesiastes, was especially meaningful to him because he had tried every enterprise and every pleasure known to man and by the grace of God, he died knowing life makes no sense without God...his life was made whole with Jesus.
Tom’s mother, Mary Lou, prayed faithfully for many years for her son to be saved. She dedicated his life to God, trusting that one day he would come to know Jesus. Her prayers were heard and answered when Tom surrendered his life to Christ. He later became a faithful member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Tom is survived by his wife, Beth Phillips; his daughter, Mary Beth Jackson (Evan), and grandsons, Teddy and Benny; his son, Thomas Phillips II (Alora), and grandson, Lincoln.
He is also survived by his sister, Melanie Foley (Mark), along with numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary Lou Phillips, and his sister, Jacqueline Pharris.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 23 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 3519 Thomson Road, Washington, Georgia, with Pastor Paul Wright officiating. Navy military honors will be rendered. The family will greet friends immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ebenezer Baptist Church, c/o Teresa Burdette, 1568 Greensboro Road, Washington, GA 30673.
